The National Award winner turns 65
Born on September 20, 1948, Mahesh Bhatt is known for his niche films in Bollywood. Bhatt directed his first movie – Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai in 1974 when he was just 26. A little later, he came up with the Shabana Azmi-Vinod Khanna starrer Lahu Ke Do Rang which won many awards.In 1982, he turned another leaf in the history of Indian cinema with his autobiographical film – Arth. The film was written by Mahesh Bhatt about his extramarital relationship with Parveen Babi. This film was Bhatt’s biggest hit. A few years later he made the critically acclaimed Janam and Naam where he highlighted personal narratives on out-of-wedlock birth and extramarital affairs.
The filmmaker launched Vishesh Films with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. The banner has produced films like Daddy, Awaargi, Ashiqui, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sir, Gumraah, Criminal, Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke. He also directed Dastak, Tamanna, the Ajay Devgn starrer Zakhm and Kartoos. After Kartoos, Mahesh Bhatt retired from direction and turned screenwriting. Apart from films, the veteran filmmaker also ventured into television with A Mouthful of Sky, Swaabhimaan and Kabhie Kabhie.
