After making the nation groove on her Jalebi bai tune a year back, Mallika Sherawat has returned with her latest item song Laila for the film Tezz. But this time around the Hisss babe doesn’t quite get it right
The trend started with Malaika Arora Khan’s Chaiyya chaiyya in Dil Se (1998) and Shilpa Shetty’s Main aayi UP Bihar lootne in Shool (1999), fired up by Yana Gupta’s Babuji zara dheere chalo from Dum (2003). But it took a while for the trend of item numbers to really catch on with big stars. The success of Malaika’s Munni badnaam hui and Katrina Kaif’s Sheila ki jawani made it almost mandatory to have an item song in every film, and with a top heroine. In 2011, Mallika Sherawat’s Jalebi bai from Double Dhamaal grabbed the audience’s attention and Kat as Chikni Chameli in Agneepath set the screen on fire early 2012. But we know that every trend hits a plateau and then the decline starts before a fresh fad, a better trend comes along. Mallika’s Laila in Tezz in all probability is likely to mark the end of the trend that has had the nation grooving.
It looks like the makers of Laila were desperate to insert an item song just for the heck of it. We see Mallika in a shimmery bra top and a tattered tribal skirt shaking her booty to the dull tune. The Murder babe is then shown revolving around vampires in a place called Desi Club. She’s trying really hard to make the insipid song watchable, but fails miserably. If the music of this song is thanda, the words are equally corny. Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice – the only saving grace of the song – doesn’t quite set the pulse racing due to Sajid-Wajid’s dull composition. Though Mallika had promised in an interview that the video will be raw and sensual, but much to the Hisss babe’s dismay, we have to admit that the song lacks the bite. Do you agree?
