The ace director turns 57 today
Born on June 2, 1956, Mani Ratnam who celebrates his 57th birthday today, will certainly be hoping for a better run in the coming year. For the ace director, with several acclaimed films and awards to his credit, found critics and audiences disappointed with his latest venture, Kadal. The movie, which launched Gautham Karthik and Tulasi Nair, didn’t do good business with distributors blaming Mani for their losses. Things took an ugly turn with the director having to secure restraining orders against distributors protesting outside his office.
Later reports indicated that Mani Ratnam would take a sabbatical and work on his next script and film. It must have been a galling experience for a filmmaker who made classics such as Nayagan, ranked by Time magazine among the top 100 films of all time. His other fine works have been the terrorism trilogy as it came to be known, comprising Bombay, Roja and Dil Se.
The management consultant from Madurai, who made his directorial debut with Pallavi Anu Pallavi in Kannada has sure come a long way. His superb technical mastery and storytelling abilities have translated on screen with films like Kannathil Muthamittal and Thalapathy, a modern retelling of the Karna story.
