The legendary singer’s daughter Sumita has alleged that Rs 30 lakh and other valuables in Manna Dey’s name have been siphoned from the bank
Sumita Dey, the daughter of ailing veteran singer Manna Dey was in for a rude shock when she found that Rs 30 lakh has been siphoned from a joint bank account in Kolkata that her father shared with his nephew.
Last week, the Girish Park police received a letter from Sumita accusing the singer’s nephew – with whom he had a joint account and a locker in a bank in Kolkata – of siphoning out cash and valuables, police sources said yesterday. According to the letter sent by post from Bengaluru, the joint account with the nephew was for the renovation of the singer’s ancestral home in Kolkata, a place he did not visit frequently because of his ailing health. The 94-year-old Manna Dey has been in hospital for a while for treatment of age-related ailments, but is said to be stable.
The money was withdrawn without the knowledge of Mr Dey or his family. “We have started the investigation process. Although a joint account holder can operate the account, we are verifying all aspects. We have not arrested anybody so far,” DC DP Singh said.
