Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola box office report: The Imran Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer’s weekend collections unimpressive

Vishal Bhardwaj’s hatke entertainer has opened to dull houses at the ticket counters and managed to collect only Rs 22.42 crores over the weekend

The news for Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma, Pankaj Kapur, the makers of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola and all those who were hoping for the movie to open to packed houses doesn’t seem too encouraging. The political satire failed to set the cash registers ringing at the box office in the first weekend of its release and is finding it difficult to attract attention and adulation from the movie buffs.

Co-produced by Vishal Bhardwaj, the movie has been made at a budget of about Rs 33 crores. Considering the movie had no big releases to compete with, the collections are quite disappointing. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “The film had a lukewarm start and didn’t show much growth over the weekend, despite releasing in 1850 screens and had no opposition (solo significant release). The business was slightly better at select multiplexes, especially in the North, but beyond a handful of centres, the business remained low-key. Collected approximately Rs 22.42 crores nett in its opening weekend (Thursday previews plus Friday Rs 7.02 crores, Saturday Rs 7.40 crores and Sunday Rs 8 crores).”

According to a trade weekly, the opening of the film was in the region of 30 – 35% which doesn’t look promising in the long run. However, with the movie getting mixed reviews, it still has a chance of picking up by word of mouth publicity. Watch this space for more box office updates.
