Pandit Ravi Shankar passes away: Celebs tweet condolences

The master sitar player, who was a Bharat Ratna and Grammy Award-winner, died on December 11 in California, USA

Celebrities from India and around the world, including Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Governor K Sankaranarayanan, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and film artistes AR Rahman, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Priyanka Chopra and Shekhar Kapur, remembered Pandit Ravi Shankar on Twitter. The sitar maestro passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in California, USA at 4.3opm local time. He was 92. Shankar had been admitted to the Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, San Diego on December 6, after he complained of breathing difficulties. That day, he had made a surprise call to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan before going in for surgery. Shankar is survived by wife Sukanya Rajan and daughters Anoushka and Norah Jones. He also had a son, Shubhendra Shankar, from his first wife Annapurna Devi. Shubhendra died in 1992.

Dr Manmohan Singh: “An era has passed away with Pt. Ravishankar. The nation joins me to pay tributes to his unsurpassable genius, his art and his humility.” He further wrote on his website: “I consider it a personal privilege to have known Pandit Ravi Shankar and to have served together with him as a member of the Rajya Sabha.”

Madhuri Dixit-Nene: Sorry to hear that Ravi Shankar has passed away. He had a tremendous influence on introducing Indian music to the West.

Sonam Kapoor: A legend no more. He put indian classical music on the map!
