One of the iconic structures in Mumbai’s Bandra area that belonged to late yesteryear superstar has been sold
Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow Aashirward in Carter Road has been sold to a businessman, Shashi Kiran Shetty at a whopping Rs 90 crores. The superstars residence we hear was embroiled in a legal battle when his live in partner Anita Advani claimed that Kaka wanted it converted into a museum. However in an interview when he was still alive Khanna had said, “By the grace of the Almighty, my daughters Twinkle and Rinke are married, settled and have huge houses themselves. They don’t need my property… Aashirwad is the home of the first superstar of Bollywood, and I would like it to remain that way. Of course, my daughters will take the final decision because it will be their inheritance in the future.”
Like Shah Rukh Khan‘s Mannat or then Salman Khan‘s home in Galaxy apartments Bandra, Aashirwad too was once a temple for India’s first superstar’s fans. In filmi folklore about the Aaradhana actor, one often hears how female fans flocked outside this bungalow to catch a glimpse of their favourite hero.
Indiaa’s first superstar, Rajesh Khanna had purchased this bungalow from Jubilee King Rajendra Kumar in the 1960s and renovated and made it his own in the 80s. Two years back when Khanna passed away on July 18, the property went to his two daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna after which the bungalow got a new name Vardaan Aashirwad. With a new owner of this property, the legendary star’s dream to make a museum remains unfulfilled.
