The legendary actor turns 62 today – we wish her many happy returns of the day
Known as the poster girl of arthouse cinema in her heyday, Shabana Azmi has evolved into one of the finest Indian actors in movies today. A prodigy of FTII (Pune), Shabana has delivered wonderful performances throughout her illustrious career in films and theatre. She has appeared in over 120 Hindi films in both mainstream and independent genres, and since 1988 has been part of in several international projects. In addition to acting, Azmi is a social and women’s rights activist, a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA), and a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Shabana received the National Film Award for three years consecutively from 1983 to 1985 for her roles in Arth, Khandhar and Paar. Godmother (1999) earned her another National Film Award, taking her tally to four. Her acting is characterised by realistic depictions of her characters. Her brief appearance as a South Indian woman in Rohit Roy’s short film Rice Plate was appreciated as much as her stellar performance as the hoity-toity socialite in Manish Acharya’s Loins Of Punjab Presents. We are waiting to watch her in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, in which she has a meaty role.
Send in your wishes for Shabana Azmi’s 62nd birthday!
