Shahrukh Khan embraces both the old and new worlds with Fan

SRK’s next film with YRF will be directed by Maneesh Sharma

After Yash Chopra’s last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Shahrukh Khan is returning to his old stomping grounds at Yash Raj Films with Fan. Principal photography commences in May 2014. This time around however, SRK’s YRF outing will be with gen next. Fan is written by Habib Faisal from YRF’s new breed and will be directed by Maneesh Sharma. Aditya Chopra will produce.

While further details of the film are awaited, here’s what SRK tweeted: “Most of the characters I do are the ones I create…for the first time I am going to play what has created me…I will be in my next a “FAN””

It is heartening that a star of Shahrukh’s stature is working with the new generation. Habib Faisal and Maneesh Sharma tore up the convention book with their unconventional ventures that have found critical and commercial acclaim. Jointly or separately they have been associated with fresh storytelling in films like Do Dooni Char, Band Baaja Baaraat, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Ishaqzaade and Shuddh Desi Romance. Perhaps this time around we will see SRK return to his native Delhi, the capital city being a favourite milieu for both Sharma and Faisal.

And, though the name of the leading lady has not been revealed yet, one can always hope that Parineeti Chopra is cast opposite King Khan. The Badshah of Bollywood has been cast opposite plenty of spunky heroines, including Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone recently. Parineeti would be an interesting choice opposite Khan.

There is of course, the ever-present question of age. At 48, Shahrukh is no spring chicken. Chennai Express neatly tackled the age issue by saying that SRK’s character in the film is 40 and Deepika deftly subverted the question by speculating that he is 50+. Wonder what the Faisal/Sharma team will do to tackle this. As long as SRK doesn’t look like a pervy cradle snatcher that Saif Ali Khan resembled in Cocktail, his fans will be happy.
