After coughing up a whopping Rs 50 crore for the exclusive satellite rights for Rohit Shetty’s directorial venture, Zee TV is now smiling for the number of eyeballs it received to beat its competitor

Our secret birdie has chirped to us that Zee coughed up Rs 50 crore to have acquired satellite rights of the highest revenue grosser of the year, Chennai Express. The Rohit Shetty film was aired last weekend took ZEE TV’s weekend gross viewership in thousands (GVT) to 1,68,942 from 53,765 the previous weekend (as per TAM Media Research). The channel’s overall GVT went up to 5,05,442 from 4,09,304 the previous week. Star Plus is currently at 4,92,849 GVT from 5,17,048 the previous week.
Zee TV, the country’s first satellite channel has been on a turnaround phase. With shows such as Jodha Akbar and Dance India Dance that have been doing well with 8,299 TVT (television vierwership in thousands) and 6,075 TVT respectively. Last week, the channel (which has been consistently at third and fourth position) has successfully displaced Colors to make it to the second position.
