On the Junglee actor’s 80th birth anniversary, his Teesri Manzil co-star recalls her fondest memories
You would never guess, but Shammi Kapoor was actually a prankster! Yes, the actor who was famous for his funny antics onscreen, loved a good joke offscreen too. His partner-in-crime Asha Parekh revealed this recently on the sidelines of shooting a special episode for Zee TV’s Star Ya Rockstar. When quizzed about her fondest memory of her first hero (she debuted as a heroine opposite Shammi in Dil Deke Dekho), she said that while Shammi hardly played pranks on her, both she and Shammi would together play pranks on other people on the sets. She also recalled how they were shooting a song for Dil Deke Dekho, when suddenly Shammi sat down on the dance floor in the middle of a step. “We asked him what had happened, but he refused to say anything. Then some people carried him off the sets. We were worried that he had got hurt, but much later we learnt that while dancing, his trousers had spit in the back.” Asha still refers to him as Chachu (uncle). It all began when Shammi’s wife Geeta Bali joked about Asha being so young during DDD and said, “Come, let’s adopt her!” That’s when Asha called her Geeta Chachi (aunty) for the first time, and then Shammi naturally became Chachu.
