Shekhar Kapur @ Cannes: running around the wrong tree

They came together to make a really ambitious project happen, but the best laid plans…

He is known as the ‘festival favourite’, but this time Shekhar Kapur will not bring back much fan mail – not the nice kind, anyway! His latest, an 81-minute “wallow in Bollywood dance numbers”, as Hollywood Reporter says, called Bollywood: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, has been fairly uniformly panned by the critics who feel that “the very kind of movies the documentary celebrates is swiftly vanishing from Indian screens today”. There is some commentary by Bollywood greats like Amitabh Bachchan (we thought he hated the B-word, how come he is part of this one?), Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Saroj Khan and Dev Anand, but it all comes too late, say those in the know. By the way, the film was made by UTV with co-producer Kapur, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Jeffrey Zimbalist. The excuse is that it was rushed through to make it to Cannes. We say that if this is the picture we want to present to the West of what we do in B-town, maybe we should retire from the international festival ranks and stay home singing songs and running around trees!Subscribe to me on YouTube
