The party activists strongly feel that the Munna Bhai actor must serve his remaining three-and-a-half years in prison
Ever since the Supreme Court verdict on Sanjay Dutt’s jail sentence has been announced, the actor has been getting a lot of sympathy and support from people all over, including former SC judge and Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju. It’s not just an outpour of emotions from Bollywood, but even his well-wishers from the South film industry including political bigwigs and stars like Rajinikanth have been showing their support to Sanju baba. Most of them have taken to social networking sites signing a petition called ‘Free Munnabhai’.
But the Shiv Sena believes otherwise. Neelam Gorhe, senior leader of the party said in the state assembly today, “Pardoning Sanjay Dutt will set the wrong example. The actor should complete his term.” This comes as a surprise considering the same party, led by the late Bal Thackeray, had supported Sanjay and helped him get the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) charges removed.
Interestingly, Shiv Sena’s arch-rival, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray wants Sanjay to be set free.
