Should ‘Omkara’ have a sequel?

Producer Kumar Mangat is planning the sequel of the 2006 hit film, but will it be as highly appreciated as the original?

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara won three National Awards, numerous popular awards and loads of critical acclaim. Based on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Othello, this film was the highest grosser of the year 2006. The ensemble cast comprised fine talents including Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. Five years after its release Kumar Mangat, the producer of the film, has announced that he’s planning the sequel to Omkara and feels that the new film has tremendous prospects. But we have our legitimate doubts. Considering the fact that the protagonist of the film as well as the scornful villain is already dead at the end of the first part, we wonder who is going to take the tale forward. Will Vivek propel the great original story down another road, perhaps with Konkona by his side? Will Naseeruddin Shah, who was seen in a cameo in the original film, play a significant part to carry the remake of the classic along on his mighty shoulders? We don’t know. But one thing we do know for sure is that the possibility of Langda Tyagi aka Saif Ali Khan making a comeback or the Kareena Kapoor-Ajay Devgn pair resurrecting from their graves is very grim indeed. Sometimes we thinks it’s wise not to touch certain things for there’s always a fear of incurring great losses even if sequels are a la mode right now. Kumar Mangat should probably take a cue from a certain Ramgopal Varma to learn what happens when the idea of remaking of a classic goes horribly wrong! The same should apply to the next generation in the story line, no?
