Shreya Ghoshal birthday special: The singer’s most memorable songs

Shreya, who is considered one of the most magical singers of this generation, turns 29 today

Born on March 12, 1984 Shreya Ghoshal made an early entry into Bollywood at the age of 16. After winning the singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, she got a quick break in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, in which she became the playback voice of both Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit.

Shreya made her mark with her silky voice and created a space for herself by singing romantic, sensual and soulful numbers. Over the last couple of years, Shreya has ventured out of her comfort zone and sung some peppy fast-paced numbers too. The singer already has an enviable list of brilliant numbers to her credit. But we pick 15 of her songs that we like best. What’s your favourite? Tell us!

1. Noor E Khuda – My Name Is Khan (2010)

2. Chikni Chameli – Agneepath (2012)

What about her songs in south Indian Languages, especially Malayalam films, where she has mastered the diction better than many malayali singers. One should also know that most of the songs based on Carnatic ragas are very difficult to sing. Her voice is magical and effort for perfection has no comparison

Some days ago, I had a very bitter experience in the name of Shreya Ghoshal. It was seen in YouTube, with a song ‘Sawar Loon’, from a recently released Hindi film named ‘Lootera’, starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. I first thought that it was sung by Shreya, but now I knew that it was sung by a comparatively less popular singer named Monali Thakur, who was once a contestant of Indian Idol reality show and whose voice is very much similar to Shreya. Both are from West Bengal. But, the real problem was in a comment to that song. First, another person who thought that it was sung by Shreya commented like this: ‘Shreya rocks, Fresh as 1953′. Another person replied to this: ‘It’s Monali, and true it’s fresh as 1953′. If their voices are fresh like 1953, then both of them should be 60 years old! But, they have not yet even reached 30, even though Shreya will be 30 within six months! They are just 10-12 years older than me. I was also a singer once, even though not professional. But, now I stopped singing because of the problems of taking high pitch. I wish I would have become a singer when I hear her songs.
