The yesteryear diva who revived her career as an eminent television personality hosting some of the most watched talk shows, celebrates her 65th birthday today
Born in Delhi on October 17, 1947, Simi Garewal is a well known Bollywood actor and talk show queen who has hosted programmes like Rendezvous With Simi Garewal and India’s Most Desirable. Simi is known in the industry for her unmatchable style and sophistication, gift of the gab and charmingly evergreen personality. Her father JS Garewal served in the army, rising to the rank of brigadier. Simi spent much of her childhood in England and studied at Newland House School with her sister Amrita.
She returned to India in her early teens, It was her command over the English language that bagged her roles in English films in Bollywood. She made her big screen debut in the 1962 film Tarzan Goes To India alongside Feroz Khan. Simi’s performance in that one fetched her many roles later, especially in the 60’s and 70’s. Her controversial role in Raj Kapoor’s then-bold film Mera Naam Joker brought the elegant actor into the limelight. Later, she worked in films like Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri, Mrinal Sen’s Padatik, Raj Khosla’s Do Badan, Yash Chopra’s Kabhie Kabhie and in many more, including Siddhartha, with Shashi Kapoor, in which she was seen nude. Simi also played a seductive vamp in Subhash Ghai’s 1980 film Karz. In 1987, she starred in the BBC docu-drama Maharajas, based on the book by Charles Allen.
Simi has been in the news as much for her diverse roles in films as indeed for her signature white clothes she is generally seen wearing in her television shows and various public appearances. Her talk show Rendezvous With Simi Garewal featured almost all the A-list celebrities and was the most desirable platform for them to connect with the masses. The lady in white, as she’s often called, returned to television in 2011 with a new talk show, India’s Most Desirable.
