The quintessential Chandni of Bollywood celebrates her 49th birthday today!
Born on August 13, 1963, Sridevi started her acting career when she was barely four years old. As a child actor, she was seen in the 1967 Tamil film Kandan Karunai. She then acted in many Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada movies before she turned 15.
In 1976, Sridevi got her first big break as lead heroine in K Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite rising superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. Sri then followed her success up with a series of films with both Kamal and Rajini.
It was the 1979 release Solva Sawan which marked Sridevi’s debut as an actor in Hindi cinema. Her second Bollywood film Himmatwala (1983) became a huge success and established the Thunder Thighs Sri-baby, as she soon became nicknamed, as a popular star in B-town. The songs and trademark Southern style dances in the film became a rage, as did her pairing with Jeetendra. The duo went on to star in several hits including Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhry.
While all these films brought her commercial success, Sridevi earned critical acclaim for her celebrated performance in the 1983 film Sadma. Her portrayal of a young girl suffering from amnesia won her the first Filmfare nomination in the Best Actress category.
In the late 80’s Sridevi had reached a position where scripts were being written with her as the central character. In 1986 came the fantasy Nagina featuring the star as a female snake who could take the form of a woman at will. Nagina was the year’s biggest hit. Shekhar Kapur’s 1987 super-success Mr. India further consolidated Sridevi’s position as the top female star in the country. But it was her performances in films like Chaalbaaz and Chandni (both released in 1989 ) that catapulted the actor to unparallelled stardom, followed by Lamhe (1991). She also did a TV show called Malini Iyer (1994-95).
Sridevi married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996 and has two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi with him. She has certainly stolen the hearts of millions of Indians in her heyday. Even today, there are many who adore her. Sri seems to have reversed the biological clock and age is just a number for this timeless beauty, who looks slimmer, sexier and younger with each passing birthday. This year Sri will be back on the silver screen with her upcoming release English Vinglish.
