Sridevi’s comeback film English Vinglish gets a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival

Comeback films are a tricky deal. Madhuri couldn’t manage it that well with Aaja Nachle. Tabu too had issues with Toh Baat Pakki. And Karisma’s comeback film Dangerous Ishq tanked dangerously!

But Sridevi, it seems, has managed to swim against that current tide of popular belief. Her comeback film English Vinglish delighted international audiences when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie, which has Sridevi playing a housewife who struggles with her English, seems to have struck a chord with the global audience, who welcomed it with a ten-minute-long standing ovation!

Critics too were pleased by the production and lavished praised on it, terming Sridevi’s character as an authentic portrayal of an issue faced by millions. Sridevi, who was at her modest best revelling in the applause, said the character she played resembled her own struggles with language. “‘As a mother and as a human being, I could really relate to the character. I’ve done several languages [in films] without knowing the language: Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi,” she told journalists after the screening.

Well, the Indian media can eat its words now, as Sridevi was panned by journalists here for having a considerable amount of surgery to look fresh and being inept in communication. But the videshi media barely noticed any of that and took to her shy persona quite happily! We think it is safe to say that we may have another international star in the making….what say?
