The two beauty queens who set the silver screen ablaze with their impossible-to-replicate dance moves through the ’90s are all set to scorch the dance floor on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5. We analyse their rich portfolios to know what it is that makes these two stars the ultimate divas of all time and each others’ fiercest competitors
It will be the rarest of rare occasions. Madhuri Dixit Nene and Sridevi, this country’s two super-heroines who ruled the silver screen and hearts through the ’90s, will share the same stage on the popular reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5. While Mrs Nene is already judging the show with Karan Johar and Remo D’Souza, Sridevi Kapoor will make a guest appearance during the grand finale to be aired on Colors channel on September 30.
Sridevi will be promoting her new film English Vinglish on the show. Directed by Gauri Shinde, this one will see Sri portraying a housewife who enrolls for an English speaking course to please her husband and family. The promos of EV are already liked by many from B-town, including dancing star Hrithik Roshan. And now, just before the release of the film, Sri will shake a leg on the stage of Jhalak. If reports are to be believed, fans could also expect a mega face-off between the two stars on the episode.
It’s an open secret that Madhuri and Sridevi have always shared cold vibes and very rarely saw eye to eye. The two were the reigning queens of their time. Even today’s heroines look up to them and try to replicate the incredible success these two stars have achieved. Besides being fantastic actors, both Madhuri and Sridevi are fabulous dancers too. While Sridevi’s songs were more flamboyant, garish and playful, Madhuri gave us classy, ultra-popular and seductive dance numbers.
But what common elements fuelled the most talked-about rivalry between the two stars? We try and figure this one out….
Acting: Considered to be gifted with fabulous looks, both Madhuri and Sridevi are rare talents. Known for their spontaneity and versatility as accomplished actors, the two are known to get into their characters almost seamlessly once the camera starts rolling. The two have always kept a reserved, shy and aloof persona in real life, but once the lights were on, the cameras started rolling and the director commanded ‘action’, the magical transformation of these two divas into the characters they played was unbelievable.
If Sridevi gave us delightful films like Sadma, Chaalbaaz, Chandni, Lamhe and Mr India, Madhuri delivered box office hits like Tezaab, Parinda, Prahaar, Beta, Raja, Khalnayak , Dil Toh Pagal Hain and Devdas.
Interestingly, the two also went on to work with Anil Kapoor in many films, most of which worked wonders at the box office. If Sridevi was paired with Kapoor in Mr India, Lamhe, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Judaai, Madhuri starred opposite the jhakaas star in Tezaab, Ram-Lakhan, Parinda, Jamai Raja, Beta and Pukar.
Dancing: Sridevi and Madhuri rose to fame with their acting talent and their divine looks, but it is an undeniable fact that the two screen goddesses became legends in their own right with their popular dance numbers and unforgettable dance moves. How could we ever forget Sridevi in her most seductive mood in Kaante nahi katte from Mr India or her classic yet mischievous number Mere hatho main nau nau from Lamhe. Sri caught our attention with her dance moves in songs like Nainon main sapna in Himmatwala and looked always unattainable in foot-tapping numbers like Kisike haath na aayegi ye ladki from Chaalbaaz.
Madhuri, on the other hand, shimmied her way into our hearts with her thumping dance steps in Ek do teen from Tezaab. She then became the ultimate seductress with numbers like Humko aaj kal hain intezaar from Sailaab and the ever so famous Dhak dhak karne laga in Beta – in fact, she is still often called the Dhak dhak girl! Mads spiced it up with her stunning adaa and effortless dance in Choli ke peeeche in Khalnayak and Dola re dola in Devdas.
We hope that on September 30, when the two screen goddesses come together on the same platform, they will fire away their dance cylinders and torch the Jhalak… stage with their magical moves from their famous songs. We are sure you won’t miss this full-fledged dance war….we will certainly be there!
