Whoa! This is big news! Visaranai directed by Vetrimaaran is India’s official entry to Oscars 2017! And guess what the film was produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Productions! Okay then it’s double celebration for Dhanush as his film Thodari releases and of course, a film produced by him enters the Oscars. It is the official entry for Oscars 2017, in the foreign film category. As you know that India sends the best of their films from the ones that was released last year. So it’s definitely a huge honour for producer Dhanush, director Vetrimaran and the entire cast and crew involved in Visaranai to be considered the BEST of the lot. Visaranai had won a lot of appreciation and got terrific reviews when the film had releases last year. It also won three honours at the 63rd National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Samuthirakani and National Film Award for Best Editing for Kishore Te. The film beat the likes of Bajirao Mastani and Pinku to get ahead of the Oscar race, though as well all know the challenge has just started for the makers to get it to the top honour. Only three Indian film have made it to the top 5 yet – Nargis’ Mother India, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and Aamir Khan’s Lagaan. So that’s quite a task cut out for the makers. But with a supportive producer like Dhanush, Visaranai could have a good chance there.
In a conversation with The Hindu, Vetrimaaran, the proud director confirmed the news. This is what he said – “There’re some formalities to be followed before I can talk at length about this,” Reportedly, it was zeroed in from 29 contenders! Woot! Woot! This is a very proud moment for the Tamil industry indeed as they are raising the bar and changing the perspective of cinema. The big event is is to take place at Los Angeles next year around February 2017!
Visaranai is based on M. Chandrakumar’s novel Lock Up, based on the writer’s own experiences with police brutality. Even before the oscars, the film has been garnering praise at quite a few international festival, including the Venice film festival. The film stars Samuthirakani, Dinesh Ravi, Kishore and Aadukalam Murugadoss in the lead. Even with the lack of stars, the film was quite noticed for how the director depicted policy brutality and the sad plight of affairs in certain parts of our country.
