After spending the longest time as a glorified extra in Bollywood, Sushant Singh tastes success with his TV serial Wanted Red Alert
Having been a glorified extra for the longest time in Bollywood, Sushant Singh finally made it big on television. The actor is one protégé of Ram Gopal Varma who never got his due as an actor, despite starting with a Filmfare Award-winning performance in Jungle. His first appearance was in Satya, which he bagged ‘luck by chance’ thanks to Saurabh Shukla’s wife Barnali Ray Shukla, who was an assistant on the film. RGV was impressed with his performance; that led to better films, but he got stuck in the hero’s-best-friend league for more than a decade. Sushant was last seen in Sudhir Mishra’s Yeh Saali Zindagi, in which he played the role of a cop, again as best friend of one of the main leads. His work was noticed, but he blames his ‘poor PR skills’ for not getting to play the protagonist. By this he explained that it was about not meeting directors and telling them ‘Sir, I love your work’, then meeting them again and saying the same thing, till they start believing it and hand out a starring role. After a lot of heartburn Sushant finally found his ticket to fame on TV — he now anchors Wanted Red Alert and has his face plastered on huge hoardings all over the country. The serial is about reviving closed police cases and using public help to nail criminals. Sushant says that it is a challenge for him as an actor, because the format of the show requires him to be very restrained and his histrionics have to be curtailed thanks to the seriousness of the subject. Better late than never, Mr Singh!
