Sushmita Sen’s protégé Himangini Singh Yadu wins Miss Asia Pacific 2012

Himangini is the first to bring home the title after Dia Mirza did it twelve years ago

Sushmita Sen is ecstatic. The former Miss Universe’s efforts have finally paid off. Himangini Singh Yadu, who was specially trained by Sush under her I Am She programme, has won the Miss Asia Pacific 2012 title. Himangini is the first of Sush’s protégés to make a mark in an international beauty pageant. “We did it! The entire team is extremely happy and very proud of Himangini for winning the international title… She has so beautifully represented India and won us back that sweet taste of victory,” said Sushmita. The last time India won the title was in 2000 when Dia Mirza brought the crown home.

We are just glad that something is finally going right for Sush. Professionally, things haven’t been going her way for quite some time now. Her films haven’t done well and she was forced to give up her plan to produce a biopic on Rani Jhansi. When she launched I Am She and bagged the rights to send contestants for the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific pageants, naysayers claimed this venture will be a flop too. However, two years later, Sush has proved that she can train winners. Let’s hope I Am She proves to be a successful one for Sushmita in the long run too. And for Himangini. The next step for most beauty pageant winners is Bollywood, but very few have actually made it. Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are the only ones to have succeeded in a major way. Lara Dutta, Dia and Sush herself have had more misses than hits. Diana Hayden, Gul Panag, Yukta Mookhey failed to create any ripples in Bollywood. What will be Himangini’s fate?
