Tabu, happy birthday!
The B-towner who perceptibly leans towards artistic cinema celebrates her 41st birthday today
Tabu was born Tabassum Hashmi on November 4, 1971 to Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana. And we can safely say that filminess is in her blood – she’s younger sister to actor Farah Naaz and niece of actor Shabana Azmi.
Tabu started off young and had a smallish role in Bazaar (1980) and in Hum Naujawan (1985) as a child artiste. And while she was signed for Boney Kapoor’s Prem in 1987, the movie was in the making for eight long years, and her first film to hit the silver screen became Pehla Pehla Pyaar (1994). But that one went unnoticed and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Debut (Female) in Vijaypath that also released in the same year.
But the lady has come a long way post that and today we cherish her performances in Maachis (1996), Viraasat (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Astitva (2000), Chandni Bar (2001), Maqbool (2003) and Cheeni Kum (2007). What’s more, this character actor is all set to be back on the big screen after a long while with Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi that releases on November 21.
