The Paan Singh Tomar director turns forty five today
Tigmanshu Dhulia entered Bollywood almost around the same time as Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali – his fellow filmmakers from the north of India. He started off as a writer in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se and soon graduated to directing his own films. Dhulia’s stories and characters are rooted, and have their own quirks. Initially, his films like Haasil, Charas and Shagird didn’t work at the BO, but over the years Haasil and Charas of them have gained cult status.
The Jimmy Shergill-Randeep Hooda-Mahie Gill starrer, Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster that released last year changed Dhulia’s fortune for good and almost overnight he became a name to reckon with. This led to the release of his stalled film, Paan Singh Tomar, which went on to become the sleeper hit of 2012. The actor in Dhulia also came to fore recently, when he showcased his acting chops in Anurag Kashyap’s gangster flick, Gangs Of Wasseypur. Currently he is busy with the sequel of SBAG and the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. With so much on his plate, we wish him all the best for the year to come.
