Trade Buzz: Will Abhay Deol taste success with his first production venture One By Two?

This week Devika Bhagat’s romantic comedy starring Abhay Deol and his girlfriend Preeti Desai releases. So far it has been a dull January, with most of the films released failing to create hungama at the ticket windows, including Salman Khan’s Jai Ho. Will One By Two face the same fate? Or will Abhay get lucky?

Abhay Deol, who has co-produced One By Two also plays the lead in the film alongside his real life ladylove Preeti Desai. While Preeti is making her Bollywood debut with this romcom, the dimpled actor has forayed into production for the first time. So it’s obvious that One By Two is extra-special for this couple. However, the duo hasn’t promoted their film extensively, since its music directors – Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa – were embroiled in a legal spat with music giant T-Series. This delayed even the music release of the film. Though Abhay and his film managed to stay in the news coz of the controversy, the makers and the lead pair of One By Two haven’t be able to create enough buzz around their flick. Will this affect the box office collections of the Abhay-Preeti starrer?

Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi says, “Abhay Deol’s One By Two looks to cater to the youth, like the recent sleeper hit Yaariyaan did, but for a film like that to really hit it big the music has to make a mark! Unfortunately for this film, that has not happened and neither is Abhay a huge draw by himself. The only way the film can do fine is on pure merit and great word of mouth.”

While Divya Khosla Kumar’s Yaariyaan was high on naach gaana and even had a special Yo Yo Honey Singh number, One By Two hasn’t offered anything too appealing as far as music is concerned. So chances of Abhay’s film wooing the audience with music don’t seem bright. But ace astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi says that One By Two could appeal to the urban masses. He predicts, “As per the numerological meaning derived, it seems the film will be liked by its target audience (read mainly multiplexes) of big cities/towns.”

With Salman Khan’s last release Jai Ho doing not too great business at the box office; Abhay’s film has a chance to rake in some moolah. But again, 2014 hasn’t started on a good note for Bollywood, so only time will tell if One By Two manages to hit the bullseye!
