Trade Buzz: Will Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express reach its destination of Rs 200 crore?

Considering the massive buzz the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer has generated, supremely confident and overtly-enthusiastic trade experts believe that it is likely to touch the ambitious figure. They can’t stop praising Rohit Shetty’s romcom! Here’s what they – and us – have to say…

The long wait for Chennai Express to arrive is finally over. Just two days and Rohit Shetty will unleash his highly-anticipated romcom with great gusto and pride. We hear that Shahrukh Khan, Rohit Shetty and Deepika Padukone, along with producers UTV Motion Pictures are already in a celebratory mood, as they are 200 percent confident that their movie will perform amazingly well in India and across the globe. So much so that they are sure that all their running around to promote the movie on popular TV shows and in different parts of the world is going to pay big time.

Our take: Wethinks this one has all the ingredients to become one of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema: the promos have created an amazing buzz, the music has become a rage, the film has Rohit Shetty and the UTV Motion Pictures banner backing it and, last but not least, the lovable pair of Shahrukh and Deepika is all set to sizzle on the big screen six years after Om Shanti Om. And everyone knows how Farah Khan’s film worked! Wethinks the SRK-Deepika-Rohit trio will ensure that CE will easily touch the Rs 100 crore mark, considering there’s so much going on in favour of the film. But the big question is – how big a hit will this romcom be by the end of its journey? And at what speed will this juggernaut get there?

Numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi: As per the numerological meaning derived, it’s a clear cut indication that the film will appeal to those who like watching ‘masala’ fare with romance, comedy, action, foot-tapping music all rolled in to one, but there will also be a section of the audience which may like to stay away from it. Hence the opinion, feedback, reviews, etc. of the film will be pretty much ‘mixed’. Everyone associated with this project will earn good profits during and even after its entire business run and as for the aam junta, it will be entertainment unlimited.

Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi: Undoubtedly, CE is going to be huge in India and overseas and I guess the movie might touch Rs 200 crore in its lifetime run. But next week CE will have tagda competition from the Akshay Kumar starrer Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara. Akshay has a huge fan following in Canada and the Gulf countries. So CE might be affected next week in terms of screens. Half the battle is already won, considering the satellite rights for CE have been sold at a whopping Rs 49 crores. The movie is expected to make Rs 60 crore plus in the first weekend. SRK’s fan following in India and overseas is unparalleled and nobody can beat him. Plus, CE is dubbed in ten foreign languages and it will have a massive release in Morocco, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Peru and Israel, apart from the US (195 screens), UK (175 screens), West Asia (55 screens) and Australia (30 screens), with more than 700 screens. Considering the combined fan following of SRK-Rohit-Deepika, the sky is the limit as far as BO collections are concerned.

So Bollywoodlifers and SRK fans, do you think King Khan’s dimpled smile and arms spread wide open will help him create magic once again at the ticket counters? And will SRK break his ‘friend’ Salman Khan’s Eid record?
