TV review: Mona Singh excels in ‘Kya Hua Tera Vaada’

It seems she will finally be able to shed her Jassi tag

Mona Singh’s new fiction show Kya Hua Tera Vaada might just do for her what all those reality shows couldn’t – make her fans remember her as ‘Mona’ instead of ‘Jassi’. Of course, you cynics will gleefully point out that Mona Singh is her character’s name too, but that’s not what we mean. When Ekta Kapoor claimed that she wanted Mona for the show since she would be able to establish a chemistry with her co-actor and make everyone believe the two have been married for 11 years in the first episode itself, we had our doubts. But after watching the first five installments of the new show, we too are convinced. Mona is perfect as the bubbly, confident middle-class housewife who handles every adversity with a smile. She knows all her husband’s moods and can accurately state when her husband is lying. No wonder she has earned the respect of her mother-in-law! Apara Mehta is delightful as the sensitive, concerned mother-in-law who loves Mona like her own daughter – a complete contrast to the evil lady she played in Ekta’s earlier show, Kyunki… Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The dialogues are real, the sets and costumes create a seemingly authentic ambience and, thankfully, the show has kept away from melodrama…so far.

Of course, there are still some things we wish weren’t the way they are. Pawan Shankar’s character Pradeep Singh, for instance. He is a diffident guy who claims to love his wife and yet, for some strange reason in the first episode, states that while he could have fallen out of love with her if she had only been his wife or girlfriend, he can never do so as she is the mother of his kids. Huh? Then there are several fat jokes based around Delnaz Paul’s character. And in every second scene, the theme song Kya Hua Tera Vaada is played in the background. Even in emotional moments that actually reaffirm the lead couple’s love for each other. It seems no one has realised that the song’s words just don’t gel with such scenes.

Kya Hua Tera Vaada has a lot of potential. If you are a Mona Singh fan, or a Pawan Shankar fan who doesn’t mind watching him in a role that is in complete contrast to his Siddhanth image, you will definitely like this show.

Kya Hua Tera Vaada airs Mondays to Thursdays on Sony at 10pm
