The ace lensman had captured the most famous Bollywood stars in his portraits

Bollywood photographer Dhiraj Chawda breathed his last on November 6, 2012 at the age of 92. The lensman had shot some great portraits of the most famous names in entertainment, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shashi Kapoor, Rajnikanth, Zeenat Aman, Lata Mangeshkar, Sunil Dutt and Nargis and family, Sharmila Tagore, Waheeda Rehman, Rekha, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Devika Rani, SD Burman and RC Boral. He captured Kajol and Karisma Kapoor as infants. Chawda had been associated with many film and political families for decades, having shot late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi as well.

Chawda had released a coffee table book of his portraits in December 2007 – titled Reflections over the last 50 years – in the presence of Bollywood actors such as Asha Parekh, Kajol, Zeenat Aman, Swaroop Sampat and Sanjay Dutt’s sister Priya Dutt. On the occasion, the photographer had paid a tribute to actor Amitabh Bachchan’s mother Teji Bachchan who had just passed away then, which is why Amitabh could not make it to the event.

Chawda is remembered as one of the best Bollywood portrait photographers. May his soul rest in peace.
