What do Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt have in common?

We all know that the two young people made their Bollywood debut in Student of the Year, but they share something else too – a lack of general knowledge about their own country!

After watching Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in Koffee with Karan recently, we started to seriously worry about the education system today. The two young actors made an appearance on Karan Johar’s popular chat show along with their Student of the Year co-star Sidharth Malhotra. And though the trio played KJo’s rapid fire round quite fiercely and cheerfully, we were stumped by their answers, especially when the filmmaker asked: Who is the president of India? While Sid got the correct answer, David Dhawan’s ladla beta replied, ‘Manmohan Singh’. Yes, we thought that was so duh, didn’t you? But Ms Bhatt went one step further and triumphantly yelled ‘Prithviraj Chavan’! Really? Now we doubt if Varun and his pretty co-star were actually students at all, or what they learned, if anything at all. Johar, who proudly called Alia and Varun his own students, couldn’t control his laughter, while we rolled off our couches at home, giggling. But we are glad that at least Sidharth got it right – that managed to do a tiny bit to re-instil our faith in the Indian education system.

The icing on the goof-up cake came when the Highway starlet and the Main Tera Hero actor took to Twitter to let their fans know that it was an honest mistake, a slip of the tongue, maybe even a mind-fart. Jr Dhawan posted, “I do actually know who the president is sorry mr Pranab Mukherjee but ya I totally bajooed myself.” And Mahesh Bhatt’s beti tweeted, “Yes I do know who our President is hahah it was an honest genuine mistake.Guilty 😐 but please do watch the show ;)”

Frankly, we don’t care about Alia and Varun’s general knowledge and we don’t seriously have any concerns about education today. After all, at the end of the day, they are good at what they do, even if they only read the gossip press…if they read at all. Akhir galti toh sabse hoti hai, but we hope these two don’t do a public goof again, however much entertainment it provides!
