Where was Chitrangda Singh in ‘Desi Boyz’?
Did you have high expectations from the Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi gal’s first commercial film? Were you disappointed after watching Desi Boyz? You are not the only one…
Apart from the regular dose of candyfloss amusement that Desi Boyz provides, one thing to watch out for in the film is the dusky beauty Chitrangda Singh emoting and entertaining in true Bollywood ishtyle. One reason for the high expectations from the talented actor has been the hullabaloo over her big move towards commercial cinema from the more rarified world of arthouse films. Big step it could have been seen as….but her role in the film was hardly that: big. Chitrangda makes her entry only in the second half of the film, is seen in three and half scenes, says five lines and has two songs – one a mood croon and another a salsa jig that even Sunny Deol, the man with two left feet, could have pulled off with a smile! Is this what you get after listening to Chitrangda rant about the endless dance workshops she took for the film and her big commercial Bollywood break? Then in that case she’d better stick to the cinema of Sudhir Mishra and the likes, where she fits in like a glove in those crumpled cotton saris and that naturalistic acting. Coz in Desi Boyz Chitrangda stuck out like a sore thumb as a sexy professor. The cheesy dialogues, awkward acting and cameo presence made it look like a desperate attempt to fit in to the commercial space. But if one goes with what she said in a recent interview – “I was getting a bit bored of doing the same kind of cinema so I thought I should do something different” – then she’d better spare her fans from her antics to fight boredom. Or are we expecting too much from the Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi actor who could certainly do what she said she was trying to do: act?
