Several film personalities came in support of Sahara chief, who was arrested recently
Various personalities from the film industry, including director Ramesh Sippy, lyricist Sameer, singers Nitin Mukesh, Sadhna Sargam, Saapna Mukherji and Rahul Vaidya, actors Fardeen Khan and Johny Lever held a press conference to defend the Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy. The Sahara head honcho was arrested on Friday (February 28) for failing to appear before the Supreme Court in a fraud case. Roy has been accused of not repaying the money, which amounts to Rs 24,000 crore to the investors.
Each film personality present at the press conference recalled their private association with Roy. Mr Sipyy was the most vocal of all. “He (Subrata) has helped thousands of people in the film industry. He is a very nice man but nobody is talking about it,” Sippy said.
While Fardeen said, “Today when someone lands in trouble, people part ways with that person, but we have come together for Sahara shree. He is an honest person and should get a chance to defend himself.”
As the conference continued, members from the media fraternity started asking uncomfortable questions after which the conference had to be called off mid-way. The reporters asked about the source of Roy’s wealth and asked if the industry would stand up for film stars accused of other crimes as well.
Apparently, Hema Malini and Jeetendra were also set to arrive at the press conference, but before they could reach the venue, the conference was over.
