Why was Salman’s Khan look in Jai Ho challenging for the designers?

The Dabangg Khan’s clothes have always been apt for the characters that he plays in his movies

Salman Khan wanted to look like a common man in Jai Ho sans suits and designer jackets. The duo responsible for his look — Ashley Rebello and his sister Alvira Agnihotri — were given clear instructions. They have been dressing him to suit the character he plays since Wanted (2009), be it the formal cop Chulbul Pandey or the elusive spy Tiger.

Jai Ho was a challenge. Talking about the film, Ashley says, “It is important to follow the brief of his character. We couldn’t just give him anything he was comfortable wearing. With Jai Ho, we wanted to make a ‘feel good’ look that goes with the message of the film.” Salman plays an army officer, Ashley had to make sure the uniform he made was authentic. “Alvira and I did a lot of home work, we spoke to army officers, studied the various regiments and how they dress,” he adds.

However, the army officer look is just one part of the film, the rest of the film has him wearing simple t-shirts, military green khakis and orange glares. “We had to keep a touch of the army background in his other looks. So we gave him a clean look with these funky orange glares which I think should catch on once the film releases.”

Ashley further reveals, “He loves his fabric to be soft, he doesn’t like coarse material. He will be seen wearing the new Being Human collection of t-shirts, jeans and jackets which will hit the stores post-release. But my personal favourite is the black tuxedo from the Tere Naina song.”

He says the star is unfussy and easy to style. “He just has to be comfortable wearing whatever we give him and once he knows the role requires a particular look, he doesn’t have any issues.”
