The director of Paan Singh Tomar announces his next film with producers Goldie Behl and Shrishti Arya which might just have Jr playing the main lead as Hamlet….Bollywood ishtyle
Paan Singh Tomar was the surprise hit of the year – it didn’t have any stars, no item numbers and was set in a milieu very rarely seen in Hindi films. Post the success of the sprinter-turned-dacoit’s biopic, Tigmanshu Dhulia has become a much sought after filmmaker. Presently he is working on the sequel of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and speculation about his next venture has already begun. We hear now that Dhulia will be collaborating with Goldie and Shrishti Behl’s production house (Rose Movies) for his adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Hamlet.
Not many will know that the PST director has written two duds for the Behls – Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai and Drona (both starring Abhishek Bachchan, both flops). We will not be surprised if we get an official confirmation of Jr B playing Hamlet. We will certainly be concerned for the makers, as we aren’t very sure if Abhishek will be able to portray ‘true and feigned madness – from overwhelming grief to seething rage’, as demanded by the character originally written by Shakespeare. Each time he has donned a grey avatar – as he did in Raavan and Game – he hasn’t really made a mark, to put it kindly.
According to an official statement, Dhulia and the Behls were toying with the idea of adapting Hamlet almost a decade ago. Says Tigmanshu, “Goldie and I had planned to make Hamlet when he made his debut – Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, for which I wrote the dialogues. I guess every film has its destiny and we could not do it back then .But Hamlet has risen again and now we will translate the tragic hero’s story on screen.” As much as we are looking forward to this tragic saga, wethinks the makers should look at actors other than Jr B who could play the role to perfection, like perhaps Hrithik Roshan or current hot fave Emraan Hashmi.
