The much-anticipated sequel featuring the dad and son trio hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations and opened to an average response at the ticket counters. Did Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani spoil the Deol party?
As expected, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 had a strong start in North India, especially Punjab and other cities where the Deols – Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are considered to have a strong foothold and massive fan following. But the second edition of the comedy flick surprisingly failed to attract audiences in the metropolitan cities in the opening weekend. As trade analyst Taran Adarsh points out, “The box office performance of YPD2 is below the mark. Although the business picked up marginally over the weekend, the overall performance should’ve been much better, since the first part had performed well at the box office. Besides, the film was partly affected due to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.”
Leading exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi opines, “Even though Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 has not exactly lived up to the humongous expectations people had from it, it’s a film with extremely smart economics! The film’s production cost is well under the amount it has fetched with the pre-sale of its satellite rights and the theatrical business is only a bonus. Even though the theatrical business isn’t great and YJHD is still very strong as an opposition, the film should be able to keep its investors afloat. Break-up for opening weekend: Friday Rs 7 crores, Saturday Rs 6.5 crores and Sunday Rs 8 crores thus totaling it to Rs 21.50 crores.”
The trade estimated at least Rs 30 crores from YPD2, but that hasn’t happened. Whether the flick manages to touch Rs 50 crores in its first week, well, that remains to be seen. Watch this space for the box office updates!
