Bollywood shocked as veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra passes away at 8o
Ace filmmaker Yash Chopra who gave the Indian film industry some of the biggest hits passed away today in Mumbai. The legendary director was 80 years old and was suffering from dengue from the past 10 days. He was last seen at Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party after which he was hospitalised on being diagnosed with dengue. He suffered a multiple organ failure and breathed his last at Lilavati hospital. Friends and well wishers expressed grief, and tweeted.
Director Mahesh Bhatt tweeted “Heartbreaking news Yash Chopra passes away!” While the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh offered his condolences on Twitter “He established the popularity of Indian cinema internationally and was honoured by many governments. He will be remembered by millions.” tweeted the Prime Minister.
Long time collaborator, yesteryear superstar Dilip Kumar said, “Shattering, hard to accept. Yash was a brother and more than a friend. I am numb and have no words to express my grief -”
Film maker Kabir Khan who produced the recent blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger with Yash Raj films tweeted “One of the happiest moments of my life was when my first film began with ‘Yash Chopra presents’ I will always cherish my moments with Yashji”. Actor Akshay Kumar too said, “I’m in shock and numb, can’t believe the news, the man who immortalised love, Mr. Yash Chopra is no more. May his soul rest in peace. My deepest condolences to the family”.
Yash Chopra, titled as the king of romance, was barely weeks away from his last release Jab Tak Hai Jaan. His last public appearance was on Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday bash where he appeared in good spirits. It indeed is a terrible blow for Bollywood who will remember him for the magical that he created on screen.
