Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani box office: The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer becomes first movie to net Rs 100 crore in a week

As predicted by trade pundits, numerologists and us, Karan Johar’s latest romcom has proved its worth at the ticket counters and has taken just a week to touch the magical figure

The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani earning Rs 100 crores at the box office isn’t surprising at all. In fact, the makers and trade pundits were just waiting to see how soon it would touch the magical number and whether it would break Ranbir’s previous box office records. And yes, it has become the first movie ever to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in a week. “100 crores, and still counting,” tweeted an elated Ayan Mukerji. Proud producer Karan Johar is happy about the way his production has wooed the masses. “When love scores a century…..you know its the only emotion to bank on….pun intended,” twweted KJo.

The romcom which is doing exceptionally well all over had already grossed Rs 100 crore worldwide, and was running short of just Rs 1 crore to touch the magical figure as far as the domestic net collections were concerned. It had collected Rs 98.84 crores till Wednesday.

“As if the smashing opening wasn’t enough, the way Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has sustained over the weekdays speaks volumes about its connect with the audience on a pan India level. Besides the youth, women from across social strata have taken to the film in a big way! From college going kids to middle class housewives, the weekdays are holding as steady as they are, courtesy the woman power. Going by the way it is, it’s almost impossible to judge where this film will stop… the sky is the limit for it!” said leading exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.

After a booming opening of Rs 19.45 crore on the first day itself, the movie went on to bag Rs 65 crore in the first weekend. And now it belongs to a league of its own.

Taran Adarsh points out, “First AASHIQUI 2 and now YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, romance is back and how! There’s something about this week. On 4 June 2010, RAAJNEETI emerged a big grosser… On 3 June 2011, READY took the box-office by storm… On 1 June 2012, ROWDY RATHORE set new records at the ticket window… This year, on 31 May 2013, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is rewriting the rules of the game… Here’s yet another week the producers can eye while planning the release of their film/s. Think about it!”
