A legend remembers another…
Lata Mangeshkar took to the microblogging site to express her grief over the death of legendary singer Manna Dey. The versatile singer said on twitter, “Aaj mahan shastriya gayak aur parshwa gayak Manna Dey sahab jinhe hum sab Manna Da kehete the wo humare bich nahi rahe, mujhe jaha tak yaad hai ,Manna da ke saath maine anil bishwas ji ka classical gana gaya tha 1947/48 me ,wo mera unke saath pehela gana tha. Manna da bohot hasmukh aur saral swabhav ke insaan the, apne kaam ke prati bohot samarpit the. Main ishwar se prarthana karti hu ki Manna da ki aatma ko wo shanti de. Main Manna da ki aatma ko pranam karti hun.”
Lata didi remembered some special moments she shared with the late singer, “I remember doing a four-raga duet for composer Anil Biswas with Manna-da. This was my first song with him. From then on we met socially and quite frequently. Main unke ghar bhi jaati thi…At that time, Manna da used to live alone…We sang the songs in the Bengali version of V Shantaram’s Marathi film Amar Bhopali. I think we were called together to sing songs that required a classical training, though we also did some fun songs like Aiso re papi bichua for Salil da (Salil Chowdhary) and Chunri sambhal gori for Pancham (RD Burman). Manna da was a very versatile singer. It was my pleasure to give him an award named after my father. He deserved a lot more than what he got.”
Manna Dey will not only be missed by his fans, but also his contemporaries.
