Ilaiyaraaja’s song will now be played at the Olympics in London

Tamil film musicians are truly going global. Maestro composer Ilaiyaraaja won international acclaim with his Thiruvasagam symphony, AR Rahman made his presence felt worldwide by winning Oscar and Grammy awards.And now, one of the popular yesteryear songs of Ilaiyaraaja is set to be played at the inaugural ceremony of the Olympics in London next month. The number, Naandhaan Ungappanda… from the 1981 film Ram Lakshman, starring Kamal Haasan and Sripriya in lead roles, reportedly features among the list of 86 songs, which are to be played at the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

The other songs include tracks from the likes of Adele, Sex Pistols, Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson. Meanwhile, back home in Kollywood, the audio of Neethane En Ponvasantham, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, will be released on July 1.
