Mohanlal had to face the wrath of the Indian Army, which is seeking the withdrawal of the title of Honorary Captain of the Territorial Army bestowed earlier on the actor
Barely a few months after the much-publicised Income Tax raids, Mohanlal appears to be in the eye of yet another storm. Reports suggest that the Army Headquarters in New Delhi wants to revoke the honorary title following complaints that the actor used his link with the Indian Army for commercial purposes. The issue caught the headlines when a retired officer of the army wrote to the officials citing an advertisement where Mohanlal claimed that he was a war veteran. Our sources tell us that though the army is quite keen to revoke the honour, they are meeting with some resistance at the ministry level. Defense Minister AK Antony, who was a former Chief Minister of Kerala, possibly perceives a hint of unpopularity stemming from such a decision. Mohanlal is already facing some embarrassing questions from noted Malayalam author Sukumar Azhikode who had questioned government’s decision to appoint the actor, raided by the IT department, as a brand ambassador of the Territorial Army. Looks like the Congress government, both at the centre and the state, will have to walk another tightrope involving corruption.
