Mother’s day special: Rajinikanth, Dhanush, Jayam Ravi come up with seven songs to celebrate Amma’s day!

On this auspicious day, I take you down the memory lane to cherish some of the most heartfelt songs in Tamil cinema which are especially dedicated to the mothers around the world.

Every year, on the second Sunday of May, we take time off from our busy self centered lives to thank and celebrate the achievements of  the selfless beings on earth  – Mother. Kollywood has a rich history of films which emphasizes on  mother-son relationships.  From Pandari Bai  in late 60’s to the current favourite Amma of Tamil cinema, actor Saranya, the Tamil industry has seen many mothers playing pivotal roles in the victory of our beloved heroes. Without making you wait any further, we bring you seven most heartfelt songs on Amma from Tamil cinema which you can sing to your mom this mother’s day and bring happy tears in her eyes.

The superstar Rajinikanth expresses his devotion to his paralytic mother in this song Amma endrazhaikkaatha  from the movie Mannan. This soulful track sung by KJ Yesudas will melt your hearts and the melody of the musical maestro Ilaiyaraaja will stay with you for hours after the song has ended. It might sound cheesy at places, but the message conveyed by the song is truly heartwarming.

Aasa patta ellaathaiyum from the movie Vyabari drives home the point that money can’t buy the motherly love. This Srikanth Deva rendition rose to top the charts, even though the film bombed at the box office. Hariharan’s melodious vocals gave a soothing touch to the song underlining the fact that no worldly possession could possibly match the affection of a mother.

The Neeye neeye song from M.Kumaran S/o Mahalakshmi showcases the fact that a mother is the child’s first and best friend. The song features spell binding friendship between the hero Jayam Ravi and his onscreen mother Nadiya Moidu. The crackling chemistry between the mother-son duo along with the playful yet touching lyrics makes Neeye neeye a Mother’s day must.

The next song in my list is one my current favourites Amma Amma from Dhanush’s VIP. This slow melancholic number about how a son misses his mom post her demise will make tears roll down your cheek. Composed by Anirudh Ravichander, the song is a must watch this mother’s day.

An another KJ Yesudas number which will unravel your emotional side is the Aarariraro song from the movie Raam. The uniqueness of this song is that it is a lullaby sung by a son to his mother. The song depicts the playful banter between Jeeva and his cine-mom Saranya. The distinctive music from Yuvan Shankar Raja and moving lyrics from Snehan makes this song stand out from the crowd.

With the words of the great poet Late Vaali and the composition of the Mozart of Madras AR Rahman, the Kalaiyil dhinamum song from the movie New is tailor made for Mother’s Day celebration. Sung by Unnikrishnan, this song delivers a wonderful message that  sky, earth and even God is small in front of a mother’s care and love.

This iconic song Thai illmal naan illai from the cult classic Adimai Penn is an ode to the mother, dedicating all your laurels on her feet. Featuring the charismatic actor Late MG Ramachandran aka MGR and his unmatchable style, this number from the late 1960’s has the power to make tears roll down your cheek. Sung by the legendary TM Soundararajan, the song pays its respect to our lovely mothers without whom our very existence is impossible.

On this emotional note, would like to dedicate all the seven songs to all the lovely mothers out there and bow our heads in gratitude for all that they have done for us. Happy Mother’s Day!!
