Vijay’s ‘Thuppakki’ lands in controversy

Posters of Southern star Vijay’s upcoming film Thuppakki has sparked off a controversy

The Nanban actor’s new film’s poster showcases the actor smoking a cigar, which has not gone down well with environmentalists.  Former Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss’s wife Sowmya Anbumani, who heads an environmental group called Pasumai Thayagam, has raised objections to the posters of Thuppakki. She alleged that this is not only a violation but also punishable under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Product Act. Also, social activist Selvakumar has filed a police complaint requesting action against Vijay, the film’s director A R Murugadoss, producer Kalaipuli S Thanu, and others responsible for the posters violating the tobacco act.

Sowmya said in her statement, “The film has violated Section 9(2) of the notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which states that promotional materials and posters of films and television programmes shall not depict any tobacco products or their usage in any form.” The wife of the PMK leader also pointed out that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a notification last year with certain amendments to showing the actual act of smoking on screen.
