‘The Muppets’ take over Bollywood, use song from Amitabh Bachchan film

After the TV show Glee used Salman Khan’s Character dheela in its trailer, it’s a Walt Disney movie that is coming home to Bollywood

Walt Disney Studios’ film The Muppets, releasing on November 25, 2011 and starring Jason Segel and Adams, is the latest to have been bitten by the Bollywood bug. The latest trailer shows ‘The Muppets taking over Bollywood’, spoofing a song from Amitabh Bachchan’s film Aks. The song, Rabba rabba, was quite popular during the film’s release in 2001. It was rendered by Sukhwinder Singh and Vasundhara Das, and picturised on Bachchan, Raveena Tandon and Manoj Bajpai. Only Sukhwinder’s voice has been used in The Muppets. But with so many popular Bollywood numbers, we wonder why the one with Sukhwinder’s voice was used. Is it because he is more familiar to Hollywood owing to Jai ho? Possible. The next time around, we hope Hollywood filmmakers use something more current, like Salman Khan’s Character dheela in Glee. Or maybe use a classic, what say? Click here to read more

Celebrate the chartbusting magic of Gulzar’s evocative lyrics

At a recent event, when asked if he was succumbing to the culture of writing populist songs, poet-lyricist Gulzar insisted that though his songs may be popular, the quality of his poetry remains top-notch

He quoted the example of the popular ‘Kallu maama’ from Ramgopal Varma’s Satya, saying that if someone bothered to dig deeper, the lyrics delve into the psyche of the gangster and, if and when he sings, it would be odd if he spouted pure Urdu instead of colloquial street-speak. This is what fans love best about Gulzar – the ease with which he adapts to the subject and comes up with lyrics that transcend words to become poetry and yet manage to be simple, with delightful metaphors.
