The outrageous sayings of Ram Gopal Varma

There was a time when RGV would talk only in monosyllables, but of late he has taken to Twitter with a certain degree of vengeance. He posts random updates, taking potshots at people without caring about hurt sentiments

Ram Gopal Varma is one of the few politically incorrect Bollywood celebs who tweets without pausing for a moment to think about the ramifications of his casual updates. His takes on almost anything and everything tend to be borderline scandalous and outrageous. He drew a lot of flak for praising Amitabh Bachchan for his act in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap using a Hindi expletive and, as much as his atheism makes for an interesting read, he often gets bashed up (virtually, we mean). While the entire nation is going gaga about Oprah Winfrey visiting the Bachchans, RGV tweeted, “Is Oprah winfrey a fish? Just asking becos the name rhymes with pomfret”. His take on nationality is quirky as well; for example, “Neither am I proud of beingtelugu nor am I proud of beingindian but I am extremley proud of being an Iamian.” Or “Evry person of evry nation thinks his is the grtst nation cmprd 2 al other nations thereby proving tht patriotism is a stupid self delusion.” Click here to read more

Amitabh Bachchan: I’m still ordinary and ignorant

He is the man whose presence adds fanfare to events, weightage to social messages, and, of course, to the cast of a film! But cinema icon Amitabh Bachchan believes he is not qualified enough to give an opinion and talk about every issue in the country

“Suddenly many invitations to inaugurate book releases, conferences, chief guests at important events!! I am not qualified for them! My profession does not give me the obvious authority to be the most knowledgeable and justified endorser of various entities!” the veteran actor posted on Twitter. “…And age does not necessarily indicate mature insight and vision, despite the grey and the glasses… I am still ordinary and ignorant,” he added. Makarand Deshpande: I don’t take life seriously

Yogen Shah

A theatre enthusiast and performer par excellence Makarand Deshpande enjoys living life on his own terms. After over 40 films and innumerable plays, the actor-director-writer is hungry to experiment even more. Theatre is his first love; film acting a perpetual second choice. And combining both has given him a colourful portfolio that he admits happened to him, luck by chance…

When he is not busy doing theatre, you will find Makarand Deshpande in films. “Honestly speaking, I do films only when I need money to run my theatre company, Ansh, otherwise I am comfortable doing plays, directing them or writing them. Theatre is the medium I love most,” says the 45-year-old multitasker. His curly mop of hair bobs up and down as he speaks, complete with theatrical gestures. Be it his portrayal of a goon in the Aamir Khan starrer Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, a lawyer in Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya or a fakir dancing with Shahrukh Khan in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades, Makarand Deshapnde has always stood out for the quirky characters he sketched on the big screen. Charmme Kaur: Love scenes are boring to do

The buxom beauty you saw in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap is getting ready for her next – and hopefully more successful – outing in Bollywood, Zilla Ghaziabad

If you are one of the few who saw Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap, you will probably remember a young girl wearing tight-fitting T-shirts and trying to look like Raveena Tandon’s daughter. That’s Charmme Kaur, a Punjabi girl from Mumbai who found her calling in Telugu cinema. At the young age of 15, she played a housewife in the Telugu film Nee Thodu Kaavali. “I was too young to know what I was doing,” she recalls. “I was just doing what Mama and Papa told me to do. Now, of course, I’ve seen it all, done it all.” Click here to read more

Madhuri, Sridevi, Karisma…does Bollywood have work for these yummy-mummies?

Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shirodkar …yesteryear’s glam dolls and now happy yummy-mummies are knocking on the doors of Bollywood once again. What pulls them back to the world of glitz and glamour? And what does Bollywood have to offer them today?

They had audiences raptly watching their jhatkas and matkas and ruled the silver screen with their magnetic charm and unparalleled charisma for many years. While Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi carved a special niche in our hearts, screen scorchers like Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar set our pulses racing every time they blinked a nicely mascaraed eyelash. And then they vanished into their own lives, managing home, hearth and husband and setting up special worlds that we were not privy to. But now these Bollywood queens are planning starry comebacks into an industry that pays not enough heed to female protagonists and where female actors tend to be young and unmarried. So will their route back to the realm they once reigned over be smooth? Can they win hearts all over again? Will they be able to make the same magic second time around? Click here to read more
