Art director Omung Kumar approached Sanjay Leela Bhansali about making a film on the life of Olympic medal-winner Mary Kom and it seems that SLB instantly agreed to produce it
The Saawariya director is mighty impressed with Omung Kumar’s attention to detail. So when Mr Kumar narrated his script to Sanjay and showed off the kind of homework he had done on the boxer, Bhansali gave his nod without wasting much time. The 14th London Asian Film Festival will be held from March 16 to 24, 2012, and Anurag Kashyap’s production Michael starring Naseeruddin Shah and Mahie Gill will kick off the fest on the opening night. Bollywood veteran Shah plays the main role of police officer Michael who inadvertently kills a 12-year-old boy during a shootout. Guilty, he turns into depression and loses his job. But to take care of his own son, he joins the Bollywood DVD piracy trade. The maverick director who gave us gems like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Black and Guzaarish turns 49 today. We take a look at his work
Born to a humble Gujarati family on February 24, 1963, Sanjay Leela Bhansali studied editing at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He first worked in Bollywood as an assistant to filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra on Parinda, 1942: A Love Story and Kareeb. Bhansali made his directorial debut in 1996 with Khamoshi: The Musical which starred his one-time good friend Salman Khan, along with Manisha Koirala, Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas. The film was not a hit but garnered critical acclaim. Bhansali’s next – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam – came three years later. It was a lavish film starring another good friend Aishwarya Rai along with Salman and Ajay Devgn. The love triangle with a tragic end worked and the film went on to become a hit.
