Celebrate the chartbusting magic of Gulzar’s evocative lyrics

At a recent event, when asked if he was succumbing to the culture of writing populist songs, poet-lyricist Gulzar insisted that though his songs may be popular, the quality of his poetry remains top-notch

He quoted the example of the popular ‘Kallu maama’ from Ramgopal Varma’s Satya, saying that if someone bothered to dig deeper, the lyrics delve into the psyche of the gangster and, if and when he sings, it would be odd if he spouted pure Urdu instead of colloquial street-speak. This is what fans love best about Gulzar – the ease with which he adapts to the subject and comes up with lyrics that transcend words to become poetry and yet manage to be simple, with delightful metaphors. Is Amitabh a good luck charm for Abhishek?

One look at Abhishek Bachchan’s career shows that during the tough times his lucky charm has indeed been Pa. Amitabh not only gave his son the first solo hit he had in Bunty Aur Babli, but every time father and son did a film together, wonders happened at the box-office. We don’t think Big B needs any charms, lucky or otherwise, but Abhi does his bit to stick by his Pa, too. Abhishek recently shot a promo with Amitabh for their home production Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap. Not only do they boogie on camera, Jr B has accompanied Big B on the vocals as well. Unlike other father-son duos, the Bachchan men are extremely comfortable sharing screen space and, much to the dismay of their female counterparts, share a great chemistry.
