Iconic Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee said the Dadasaheb Phalke award is a recognition of his hard work in the last 53 years

Veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee, 77, said it was an “emotional moment” for him to be named for the Dadasaheb Phalke award – the highest honour in Indian cinema – and he would receive it on behalf of the doyens of the Bengali movie industry whose guidance helped him evolve as an actor. “I am very happy. It is an emotional moment for me. I thank everybody. It is a recognition of the hard work I have put in for the last 53 years. The people of my country have recognised my toil,” said Chatterjee. Asha Bhosle to judge ‘Sur Kshetra’ on Sahara One

Singing legend Asha Bhosle will be one of the judges on Sahara One’s Sur Kshetra, a new reality show that will feature singers from India and Pakistan. A source told IANS that the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Vibhushan winner, who has sung evergreen numbers like Mehbooba mehboobaPiya tu ab to aaja, Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko and Dum maro dum, will be one among three judges on the show. The other two names will be officially announced soon by the channel. Other names associated with the show include singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya and hit Pakitani singer Atif Aslam, who will captain the Indian team and the Pakistan team respectively. Two other Pakistani legendary singers, Abida Parveen and Runa Laila are also touted to judge the show. The host of the show, expected to be launched in February, is yet to be announced. Sur Kshetra is being produced by Gajendra Singh of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Antakshri fame, founder and managing director, Saaibaba Telefilms.

On December 14, 1924, Ranbir Raj Kapoor was born to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi in Peshawar. Since his father was already popular in theatre and films, Raj Kapoor debuted with Inquilab (1935) at the age of 11. But he got his big break 12 years later in the movie Neel Kamal (1947) where he starred opposite Madhubala. By the time he turned 24, he had established his own banner – RK Films. The first movie under this banner was Aag. Raj is remembered as the ‘Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema’ because he often portrayed a tramp-like figure in his movies. Click here to read more

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar turns 89 today. We wish him a very happy birthday and a long life

Muhammad Yusuf Khan, popularly known as Dilip Kumar, is a legendary Bollywood actor. Dilip Kumar turns 89 today. He started his career in 1944 with the film Jwar Bhata. He starred in a wide variety of films such as Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), the tragic Devdas (1955), the comic Azaad (1955), the historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and the social drama Ganga Jamuna (1961). In 1976, the actor took a five-year break from film performances. In 1981, he returned with a character role in the film Kranti and continued his career playing central characters in films such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His last film was Qila in 1998. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. He has worked in around 60 movies and has inspired many upcoming B-town actors. Click here to read more

Bhupen Hazarika, veteran classical music director and singer, passed away in a Mumbai hospital today. He was 85. The legend had been ill for the past few months after a bout of pneumonia. He was critically ill and on dialysis when he died. The Padma Bhushan awardee was not just a singer-songwriter, but an acclaimed poet, journalist, filmmaker and writer. Click here to read more
