The Film Writers’ Association (FWA) is on a mission to curb TV channels’ malpractice of forcing a writer, composer and lyricist to give up an integral royalty right for a paltry sum of Rs 5,000. This practice not only devalues a writer’s importance in a project they work on but also infringes upon the new Copyright Amendment Bill. Kamlesh Pandey, a senior writer and member of FWA has urged writers to not sign any new contract given by TV channels and producers which violates the new Copyright Amendment Bill. Recently, a writer came to FWA with a copy of the new contract the channel wanted him to sign and surrender his rights for a one-time payment, which is against the law and it also violates copyright clauses.
