French Loaf to salute Ilaiyaraaja with 100 meter cake

India’s largest chain of bakers, The French Loaf, will create a 100 meter long photo cake of 1,000 kg by compiling 1,000 photographs of maestro Ilaiyaraaja on it

The egg-less chocolate cake will have movie posters and pictures from films and concerts of Ilaiyaraaja, arranged chronologically from his debut film Annakili to his latest project Neethaane En Ponvasantham. Click here to read more

We are, of course, referring to Gautham Menon’s much-ballyhooed Ekk Deewana Tha, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and Ye Maya Chesave, the Tamil and Telugu originals respectively, were successful at the box office. The Tamil version in particular was refreshing to watch for the strong lead performances of Simbu (or Young Superstar as he likes to call himself) and Trisha Krishnan. And Ganesh as Simbu’s cinematographer friend was an absolute delight, delivering his droll one-liners with a straight face. Alas, as we know now, the Hindi version stinks. Click here to read more

Amitabh Bachchan, Asha Bhosle awarded at Pune International Film Festival

Amitabh Bachchan and Asha Bhosle were awarded with Life Time Achievement award at the 10th edition of Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) that was held on January 12, 2012. Big B was happy to catch up with SriRam Lagoo, Rani Mukerji and Ashaji and posted on a microblogging site, “On stage meeting the great SriRamLagoo, played such important roles with me. And the lovely Rani Mukherji, pretty and bubbly as ever (sic)”. On the other hand, Ashaji contributed to the event by singing a few lines of her Tamil songs with Ilaiyaraaja. Apart from these two, music director Ilaiyaraaja was awarded the Sachin Dev Burman International Award for creative music and sound and actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar was felicitated for his contribution to cinema for the past 50 years. South star Vijay goes international with ‘Yohan’

AR Rahman will compose the music for the Eros film co-produced and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon

Looks like Vijay is all set for the global stage while keeping his feet firmly rooted in the Indian ethos, or so director Gautham Vasudev Menon would have us believe. Menon’s Photon Kathaas Productions (PKP) has inked a deal with Eros International and Future Film Production (UK) for Vijay’s forthcoming action thriller Yohan Adhyayam Ondru (John: Chapter 1). Menon will direct the film that is expected to begin shooting in the second quarter of 2012. AR Rahman, the Chopin of Chennai, will compose the music. He is, of course, a shareholder in Photon, so the music is bound to be excellent. Click here to read more

Asha Bhosle awarded the Akshaya Mohanty Sanman

Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has been awarded with the Akshaya Mohanty Sanman 2011 for her contribution in the Indian music industry. On October 12, on the occasion of the birthday of great Oriya singer and musician Akshaya Mohanty, the award was presented with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. Previously, this award had been bestowed upon singer Manna Dey, filmmaker-lyricist Gulzar and music composer Ilaiyaraaja. Asha Bhosle started her career in music in 1943 and established her unique style. She has sung in about 18 Indian and some foreign languages. Throughout her career, Ashaji has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadsaheb Phalke Award, along with several Filmfare awards and also the National Film Award.
