Ashvin Kumar: Bollywood’s system has obviously failed

The Little Terrorist director, who is back with a thriller in the form of The Forest, speaks about making inroads into mainstream Bollywood and what keeps him going despite the faulty distribution system

It has been six years since the Little Terrorist was nominated for the Academy Awards, but director Ashvin Kumar is still waiting to see his feature film The Forest hit the screens. His baby has been lying in the cans for five years now. “The Forest was complete and ready to release five years ago. We had a distribution deal with a production company in place. But at some point they just stopped taking my calls. We had everything – high production values, thrilling content and decent actors,” he says. PVR has finally decided to back the film which stars Nandana Sen, Javed Jaffry and Ankur Vikal and release it as a part of an initiative called Director’s Rare. Slated to hit the screens in the month of May, The Forest is a thriller where a husband and lover lock horns over a woman against the backdrop of a forest and a man-eating leopard. Tannishtha Chatterjee: I love the madness of Bollywood but, hey, it is madness!

For those with a taste for world cinema and an inclination for art-house films Tannishtha Chatterjee’s restrained performances are an unmistakable delight. In a freewheeling chat the Brick Lane gal talks about her tryst with acting, her upcoming films and why she has remained a not-so-known face for the average filmgoer

It is surprising that actor Tannishtha Chatterjee, often referred to as the ‘queen of parallel cinema’ in India, can walk along a crowded street in Mumbai without getting mobbed. The fine performer has acted in several international films so far, and is currently doing Joe Wright’s ambitious film Anna Karenina alongside global heavyweights Jude Law and Keira Knightley! On home turf, she was seen in Abhay Deol’s Road, Movie, but she has done numerous plays on an international platform, bagged enviable acclaim for her performance in the British film Brick Lane and yet few know here in India. Doesn’t this anonymity bother the performer in her? Click here to read more

LOOT Movie Review: Downhill all the way

Govinda’s film is a painful reminder of the collapse of the comic caper in Bollywood, but it’s still better than Rascals

There is a don (oh, there are many of them peeping out of every nook and cranny of this abominable comedy) played by Prem Chopra who loves Meena Kumari and Pakeezah. Sighing loudly he tells another don, played with lipsmacking relish by Mahesh Manjrekar, ‘They don’t make heroines like Meena Kumari any more. She was someone you wanted to marry. Nowadays the heroines are good for only one thing’. That is just about the most subtle dialogue you will get to hear in this in-your-face farce where three small-time wastrels – Govinda, Jaffrey and Mahaakshay, and a scowling goon Suniel Shetty – take off to Pattaya. What follows is a fiesta of fatuous gags and dialogues including of course, bad puns on ‘pattaya’ and ‘guard’. Wouldn’t miss out on that. Loot looks like an unfinished product from a group of actors and technicians who lost their way in transit. This one should have ideally remained in the cans. Just why Suniel invested into this piece of filmed garbage is anyone’s guess. Click here to read more

‘Double Dhamaal’ Review: Look at the bright side

The film revives the hilarious knockabout farces harking back to the glory days of silent cinema

Films like Double Dhamaal are critic proof. No matter what we say, there is always going to be a market, comprising obviously the lowest common denominator, for such loud, crass and senseless comedies. Hence, there is no point in criticising these films. Instead, it would bode us well to appreciate the few crumbs of entertainment that the film bestows us. As they say, when ravishment is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it. Click here to read more
