Happy Birthday, Jackie Shroff!

Jackie Shroff celebrates his 52nd birthday today, February 1. The actor shot to fame when he played the lead role in Hero in 1983. Since then, he has had several hits – Andar Bahar, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Tridev and Sangeet saw some of his best performances. He excelled even in supporting roles in Parinda and 1942: A Love Story and won Filmfare Awards for them. He played a villainous role in Mission: Kashmir to much critical acclaim. Jackie has explored a variety of roles – father (Yaadein), an upright Air Force pilot (Border), a lecherous goon (Boom), a saint (Malik Ek) and a well-meaning drunk (Devdas). More recently, he’s shifted his focus from Bollywood to regional cinema. He starred in the offbeat Marathi film Rita, in Telugu films Shakti and Panjaa, the Tamil film Aaranya Kaandam and the Malayalam film Platform No.1. Jackie is known for being more than just a good actor. The style statement he made in Tridev way back in 1989 remains unmatched even today. He is well-known in B-town as a generous, warm-hearted person and is affectionately referred to as Dada (elder brother). While he gears up to launch his son Tiger’s acting career, we wish Jackie a happy birthday!

Jai-Veeru turn police officers for ‘Marathi Sholay’!

Sholay is all set to be remade again. And this time on a regional level. But after enduring many unsuccessful remakes of this cult movie, should we really be looking forward to it?

We guess it’s time to replace ‘kitne aadmi the?’ with ‘kitne remakes the?’ (How many remakes were there?). Sholay has inspired the making of Subhash Ghai’s Karma (1986), Sibte Hassan Rizvi’s Joshiley (1989), Ajit Diwani’s Ramgarh Ke Sholay (1991), Rajkumar Santoshi’s China Gate (1998), Kanti Shah’s Duplicate Sholay (2002) and Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (2007). We’re still recovering from the aftermath of RGV’s Aag when the taazi khabar at our doorsteps is that Sholay will soon have a version in Marathi. “The original Sholay cast a deep spell on our minds. We can’t change that. So I am presenting a serious story in a comic form and it is called Marathi Sholay,” said Marathi film director Vickey Kharat in an interview. Click here to read more
